Achievements in 2008
Honduras Outreach, Inc., remains dedicated to improving the quality of life for residents of and visitors to the Agalta Valley, Honduras. So, how did we spend 2008?
Education
- The Education Program worked with 1,125 students at all grade levels
- 95% of students received favorable approval rating
- 402 students graduated to the next level which is 36% of the student populatio
- HOI provides support for 62 teachers of which 49 are volunteers and 13 are contracted personnel
- Aldersgate Elementary had an enrollment of 161 and graduated 17 students
- Hope Middle School had an enrollment of 207 students and graduated 42 students
- Kindergartens were built in Cerro Chele, Buen Pais, Las Delicias and Los Patios.
- Total kindergarten attendance was 567 children and 289 graduated to elementary school.
- HOI scholarship program provided help to 126 high school students with 29 scholarship recipients graduated in 2008 representing 19 different communities.
- In conjunction with PRALEBAH, Honduras Outreach opened six adult education schools in seven different communities (Las Manzanas, San Agustin Arriba, Juan XXIII, El Jobo, Cerro Chele, Culuco, and Potrero de Casas)
- The HOI adult education schools have 110 enrolled adults and 26 graduated from 6th grade in 2008.
Community Development
- HOI worked with 36 communities and villages
- 88 latrines were built
- 383 floors were installed
- 33 roofs were laid
- 102 room additions were built
- 104 chimneys installed
- 2 homes and 6 sinks were built
- 13 water connections were completed
- 1,900 children attended Vacation Bible School
- 1,871 villagers were attended to by group medical provider
- 322 villagers received dental care and examinations
- 4 youth workshops were conducted on increasing self-esteem and personal evolvement
- 40 kindergarten teachers attended our teacher workshops
Spiritual Development
- The Agalta Valley Pastor Association which HOI formed is now at program execution stage
- 2000 people attended National Bible Day sponsored by the Pastor Association
- 12 new pastors graduated from the Louise Mahaffey Bible Institute held at the Ranch
- HOI donated building material for churches of 7 denominations in 10 different villages
- Donations were made to churches for 226 bags of cement, 40 zinc plates, 110 chairs
- HOI donated 800 Sunday School manuals and 31 leader guide books
- 214 Bibles were donated to a number of villages
- HOI will be working with 16 communities on building or refurbishing their church.
- New churches are being built at Potrero de Casas and in Chindona Gualaco
Medical and Public Health
- HOI clinics attended to 10,804 patients of which 2,453 were under the age of five
- We worked with 1,612 people in family planning and delivered 432 obstetrical ultra sounds
- HOI attended to 459 patients in physical and rehabilitation therapy
- The dental clinic attended 1,125 patients
- 688 teeth were extracted and 291 cavities filled
- 796 patients received dental hygiene education
- 846 workshops were delivered on Maleria;38 lakes are monitored; 0 cases of malaria reported
- 1061 workshops were delivered on Dengue; 0 cases of Dengue reported
- 16 workshops held on water management; 17 chlorination administered in communities; 695 chlorination administered in homes
- 816 dogs vaccinated against rabies
Agriculture and Animal Husbandry
- Relationships and cooperative partnerships were strengthened with SOGIMEX and GTZ
- HOI is working with 9 groups of ranchers in the prevention and control of mastitis and in the development of biodigestor fuel.
- The Christian Vet Missions worked in 29 villages and treated 825 animals including dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and cows.
- 262 surgeries were performed by the CVM vets
- The Ranch Agriculture Vocational School graduated 14 Agggies from 10 different communities
- The ranch has net 189 heads of cattle. 18 heads were sold in 2008 from a inventory of 210 which represents a 30% growth over 2007.
- Our swine program started in 2007 with 4 pigs. In November of 2008, we had 35 pigs.
- 4,800 chickens were purchased and consumed in 2008
- A biodigestor was installed in November of 2007 to serve as an educational medium for producing methane from cow waste. Workshops are held periodically to different villages.
